Why You Need Antivirus to Protect Your Apple Devices
In a nutshell:
- Mac and iPhones have been attacked a number of times
- Apple products are still vulnerable to attack
- Pick an antivirus software with safe browsing features and anti-theft tools
Wait, Aren’t Apple Products Immune?
Ah yes, that old chestnut. Apple might be light years ahead of the competition when it comes to building super-secure laptops and mobile devices, but no one’s perfect.
In fact, Apple’s been embarrassed a number of times over the past few years by unexpected attacks, be they of the malware, ransomware or data breach variety. And that means you still need to take precautions when it comes to securing your sleek and shiny iOS devices, too.
Why Don’t All Antivirus Vendors Cover Mac and iPhone?
Okay, there are a couple of issues at play here.
First of all, security for PC and Mac are different kettles of fish. The reason many people mistakenly think that their Macs are impenetrable in the first place is that hackers have been hitting PCs for several years and they are much more common.
That means that there are a bazillion different types of malware targeting PCs, sure, but it also means that the best antivirus providers have decades of experience of combating these attacks, too.
On the contrary, Mac attacks are fewer and further between, and they take a different approach to tackle. For many companies, it seems like the payoff just isn’t big enough to risk sticking their neck above the parapet and claiming they can keep your Mac safe, too. Better to stick to their existing area of expertise.
When it comes to iPhone, things are a little more complicated. iPhones and iPads work in a very different way to Android devices, partly because of Apple’s insistence that you don’t need any additional security for these. iOS devices by their very design will not accept or install any software that hasn’t been approved by Apple and purchases via the App Store.
That makes it extremely difficult for any form of malware to sneak into your device (unless it’s through poisoned code, which has happened in the past). Unfortunately it also means that you can’t actually download any security-focused software for iPad and iPhone, because Apple won’t approve them!
Strictly speaking, that means that there isn’t any antivirus software on the market that fully caters to iPhone. However, there are still a ton of privacy, data/social media protection, anti-theft and other features that can be of real value to iPhone users. While they are relatively rare, there are vendors out there who provide these across the board.
What Antivirus Software Covers Mac?
By far the most impressive Mac-only security suite is the one provided by Intego. This ticks all the usual boxes for great antivirus, scoring extremely high in independent anti-malware tests, with outstanding performance that won’t slow your system down.
It also comes with tools like Scan & Clean, to help clear out unnecessary files and speed up your machine, a personal firewall to safeguard your privacy online, and impressive parental controls to keep kids safe and monitor time spent online. Plus, there’s an easy-to-use central dashboard to manage your devices from one place.
And What About My iPhone?
Okay, so as explained above, there isn’t any specific anti-malware for iPhone, but there are security measures you can take.
First up, the Find My iPhone feature and Aviva’s tracking app will both give you a little extra peace of mind. But for more complete coverage, take a look at TrendMicro’s Internet Security Suite, which comes with a formidable range of tools.
These include privacy protection and safe browsing features as well as anti-theft tools for mobile - including iPhones. Best of all, its antivirus coverage is excellent and works across Windows and Mac, while it mobile protection for Android and iOS is also superb. If you’re looking for an antivirus package that ticks all the device boxes, this is a great shout for you.
