AVG Review

By: Craig Chamberlin

Spotlight on AVG:

While it may be a surprise to many in the UK, AVG Technologies has been making security software for over 20 years. To this day, AVG Technologies specialises in bundling various software packages for comprehensive computer security and performance.

AVG Technologies was founded in 1991 in the Czech Republic. The company headquarters is now located in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

  • Pros:  Easy to install and manage. Unlimited licences available in AVG Ultimate.
  • Cons: Not as user friendly. Average detection rates and protection. More expensive than its competitors.

  • Ease of Use: Intermediate For Users
  • Reliability: Average
  • Value: Below Average

  • AVG Internet Security 2016 - Includes full AntiVirus protection, firewall protection, online identity and financial protection, e-mail and spam blocking for a single computer.
  • AVG Ultimate - Includes full AntiVirus protection, firewall protection, identity and financial protection, e-mail and spam blocking, and PC optimisation tools for unlimited devices.

Ease of Use:

The installation of AVG AntiVirus 2016 included with AVG Ultimate and AVG Internet Security 2016 is definitely easy to use but is a bit less intuitive than extremely user friendly packages such as Norton, Kaspersky and McAfee.

At a glance, users can quickly determine the security and vulnerability of their machine. With just a few clicks, users can perform quick scans, full scans or performance optimisations of their system.

AVG AntiVirus 2016 also has a very quick installation. One downside is AVG Ultimate includes two separate installers for browser protection and PC optimisation. Although these installations are fast, it does not offset the frustration and confusion that comes with separate installations necessary to get full protection.

AVG AntiVirus 2016's dashboard also allows users to easily run AntiVirus scans, updates, identity theft settings, and PC tune ups. The dashboard is clean, easy to read and somewhat intuitive.

AVG Reliability:

When compared, most antivirus packages need to hold their own in two primary areas of antivirus protection: virus detection through traditional virus scanning and real time protection as files are saved to the system.

According to AV-Comparatives, a prominent 3rd party virus testing company, the AVG AntiVirus 2016 package included in AVG AntiVirus 2016, AVG Internet Security 2016 and AVG Ultimate was below average for traditional virus file detection and for real time scanning protection.

It's also important to note that AVG AntiVirus uses less resources than other antivirus products.  This means users will experience less system slowdown due to installed protection utilities.

Customer Support:

Like their competitors, AVG provides customers with many support options for AVG AntiVirus 2016. The website includes a knowledgebase, articles and frequently asked questions. Depending on their comfort level, AVG users can use the online chat system, e-mail system or even purchase various support packages through their AVG-Go Total Care technical support site.

Value for Money:

Between all three products, AVG offers below average protection at above average prices. AVG's products are an excellent choice for users already comfortable with their existing AVG AntiVirus package.

One great value added by AVG AntiVirus 2016 is the 30-day money back guarantee. If users are not completely satisfied with their product then they can get their money back, no questions asked.

Bottom Line:

AVG AntiVirus is a great option for those already in the AVG ecosystem. Depending on the package, AVG includes full antivirus protection, firewall protection, identity and financial protection, e-mail and spam blocking and PC optimisation tools for up to an unlimited number of computers or devices.

When it comes to virus protection, while AVG AntiVirus 2016's below average detection rates may leave something to be desired, the familiar ecosystem for those using the free version make it a great choice for users looking for virus protection packaged with PC optimisation.
